Hopewell Color Run

Color runs have become extremely popular over the last few years and offer an opportunity to capture creative action and reaction photographs. The powder being thrown into the air creates a colorful aura around the runners, while at the sametime the runners themselves are expressing many different emotions. For this adventure I had to brave the colored powder right along with the runners and the challenge became adjusting to the correct shutter speed to capture the colors as they were suspended in air.

Dragonfly Foundation

This photo caption story was taken at half time during a varsity boys basketball game, during a highly attended grudge match between Lakota East and Lakota West. East Dragonfly Ambassadors organized a hair donation event as part of an awareness and fundraising campaign for the Dragonfly Foundation, an organization that supports children suffering from cancer. The challenge to capture these photos was the fact that the gym was extremely crowded and the haircut area was set up along a narrow piece of track overlooking the gym floor. This is the kind of story that is best suited to be told through pictures, and my focus was on capturing their reactions as their hair was being cut.

Every photographer at some point is tasked with taking a portrait picture. Learning how to position your subject and keep them relaxed. Each Spark issue we run two chief opinion columns with accompanying fun photos. This particular issue we found a brick stairwell outside the Smithsonian Institution Building in Washington, D.C., that was interesting. The challenge for this photo, aside from the fact it was near the end of November and very cold outside, was the angle required to get the best photo. I tried several different angles and in the end decided I would need to lay on the ground to get the right angle. The concrete was cold but sometimes you have to sacrifice for that one good picture.
